Human-centered technology in health care

Research theme

Staff shortages, rise in healthcare problems, GDPR and data security, cost savings, ect. Healthcare and assistance are getting more and more complex and specialised. Technological innovations can respond to challenges in healthcare. Within this programme, on the one hand we develop new applications that can optimise care. On the other hand, we research how the implementation of various forms of technology in the daily healthcare practice can be made easier. Finally, we emphasize lifelong learning through technology. In this way, we work on a higher quality of care that puts people first: citizens, care users, and their environment.

Smooth implementation and use of innovations in healthcare

What are we researching and for whom?

Health care is strongly dependent on technological innovations and tools. That is logical, as those are without any doubt an asset for effective care.

The correct and efficient use of technology is often much more complicated than was initially thought. That is why, with the research and innovation, we make the gap smaller between what the caregivers and care users need on the one hand and the capacities of technology developers on the other hand.

Desired outcome

With this research, we strive for a smoother implementation and a better daily use of technological innovations that respond to the needs of healthcare. Think of 3D-scanners, 3D-printers, applications from artificial intelligence, non-invasive 3D-movement analysis, immersive rooms, simulation labs, virtual and augmented reality, ...

Research lines

Contributions to improvements of the care for all patients and citizens is our main goal. Well-trained counsellors and volunteers are very important in this. The programme must be carried out efficiently and qualitatively. We give patients, citizens and their surroundings a say and direction in their care, insofar as possible. That is what we want to achieve with the efficient use of human-centred technology within four research lines.

Application of technology in treatment, therapy, and prevention

Technologie in een therapeutische sessie

We search for optimal technological innovations for better (preventive) care for patients, citizens and their environment. We do this by objectifying and standardising interventions and by delivering more effective and/or efficient interventions. We also do this by helping to deal with the shortage of hands to counter a declining quality of care. We already have a lot of expertise and we build on that.

Professionalisation of caregivers

Zorgverleners professionaliseren op vlak van technologie

In a fast-changing care landscape, education and lifelong learning are gaining in importance. And that is precisely the core business of Artevelde UAS. We research how we can use technology for impactful professionalisation of caregivers, volunteers, and other supporting profiles.

Improved organisation of care

Organisatie binnen de zorg verbeteren

Organisations, institutions and government use technology as a tool to organise high-quality care in an affordable, feasible, manageable and efficient way. Big data, algorithms and planning tools are a big help for this. But in the profession, the implementation of technology often is an obstacle. Here we use our strength.

More direction and control for care users

Have care users take the responsibility they want and deem feasible. We use technology as a facilitator and for support. Yet, technology can also be used as a safety net, minimal control or care.
